Ethics in Digital Media

Journalists have a responsibility to its public, and with a shift into the digital world, I think it’s more important now than ever before to respect the ethics in digital media. From the University of Wisconsin, “A central question is to what extent existing media ethics is suitable for today’s and tomorrow’s news media that is immediate, interactive and “always on” – a journalism of amateurs and professionals.”

The Digital era is changing, and revolutionizing media as we know it, and I think we need to stick back to the basics and just enforce ethics in journalism. It’s time to enforce new ethics, as the era transforms, but it is still a practice that should be emulated.

Last year, I took a course called Ethics of Journalism. Throughout the semester learned what is considered good ethics, for a journalist. With today’s society obsessed with the internet and social media, journalists are expected to get the story out there as soon as possible, which will sometimes conflict with ethics. It is important that we, as journalists, remain ethical. Although, it may seem difficult in today’s world; if journalists are not ethical, they set a bad example for the rest of the society. Right now, society needs to learn ethics of their own.
