In my opinion, if you are not passionate about what you are doing, you should find something else to do. This is especially true for science writing. In order to have a great piece, the author must envelop themselves in the science. Without a true passion for the topic, the resultant work will be less than stellar. Digging deep into the science roots takes time, energy, and true passion. However, just writing a piece full of scientific details and data is not enough for the general audience of science journalism and blogs. Instead, the science must be artfully framed in a narrative or story that captures the readers attention and interest. So the inspiration for the science writer must be more the science. Inspiration should come from enthusiasm of the science, the task of educating an audience, and the beauty of telling a great story.
