Emulating or unoriginal?

One of my biggest concerns as a writer is falling into a trap of unoriginality. Countless advice I have received and seen says to read a lot and emulate the styles of your favorite authors. I worry that doing this can lead into not being creative and not creating an original style that is my own. I know that I have yet to make my own style of writing and most of what I write can be seen as reminiscent of certain authors.  That being said, I want to carve my own path. One thing I have noticed is that popular books and movies are starting to be about one of a few things and everything just copies the mold. My biggest question is how to break free from the mold and create something new and original and still be successful with it.

I cannot agree with this more. Each year more and more unoriginal work comes out and its just seems way to close to another Fad thats influencing purchases. Like when the Twilight books got huge, a couple of months later there were more vampire love stories out on the shelfs than ever.
